PIP: Voluntary surgical contraception (VSC) is an operative procedure to block the ducts which carry reproductive gametes. In so doing, conception is prevented. The procedure is intended to be permanent and irreversible. Duct blockage is achieved through either ligation, mechanical occlusion, or electrocoagulation. Female VSC is best accomplished through minilaparotomy using the modified Pomeroy technique to perform bilateral tubal ligation, while male VSC is best performed using the non-scalpel technique developed by Dr. Li Shunqian of China in 1984. These procedures are best performed under local anesthesia. The author considers the rationale of choosing VSC, use of VSC in family planning programs, and the promotion of VSC activities in family planning programs. Aggressive marketing and high quality client services are needed for an effective VSC program within the family planning programs of developing countries. Donor support is called for.
