PIP: Bangladeshi society is strongly influenced by cultural inhibitions towards open discussion about sexual matters, especially concerning HIV/AIDS. Most people here believe that HIV/AIDS is a disease that affects only foreigners and people with low morals. Young people have no easy access to information about reproductive health-related problems and are thus ignorant of HIV/AIDS and its consequences. To fight this problem of fear, lack of information, and stigmatization, the Confidential Approach to AIDS Prevention (CAAP) Hotline was established in 1996. CAAP is an education center providing information and counseling on HIV/AIDS to the general public and to people living with HIV/AIDS and their families. It offers information and training on care and self-care through telephone, mailbox, and mobile units. Moreover, CAAP offers free HIV testing, and gives care-providers a 1-week training course covering all aspects of HIV/AIDS, with special emphasis on disease transmission, risk factors, psychological support, and the responsibilities of caregivers. In addition, CAAP organizes advocacy programs on HIV/AIDS and distributes leaflets and posters to sensitize the community.
