Objective: The aim of the study was to evaluate the seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infection in group of women from Przodkowo commune.
Methods: Panel of 537 serum samples from women were examined. Testing for 7 gondii IgG and IgM antibodies was performed using commercially available kits (bioMérieux). Moreover, all IgG-positive samples were tested with avidity test (bioMérieux).
Main observations and results: Specific IgG antibody was found in 54.4% of examined group and the prevalence increased with age (from 22.8% among the group of the youngest women to 86.7% among the group of the oldest ones). Almost all of IgG-positive sera (96%) had high avidity. Moreover specific IgM was found only in 6 (1.5%) women.
Conclusions: Results of the present study indicate that 7 gondii infections are widespread in examined group of women (more than 50%). The seroprevalnce of toxoplasmosis in Poland is sufficiently high to warrant the attention of healthcare specialists. The information about toxoplasmosis should be propagated among population of women and gynecologists.
