Spontaneous regeneration of the mandibular bone following hemimandibulectomy

Br J Oral Maxillofac Surg. 1990 Apr;28(2):128-30. doi: 10.1016/0266-4356(90)90140-g.

Abstract

Spontaneous regeneration of the mandible following hemimandibulectomy is rarely reported. The main source of osteogenesis seems to be the periosteum. The critical elements being a pre-existing chronic infection and the age of the patient with immobilisation playing an insignificant role. This paper reports such a regeneration following hemimandibular resection for osteomyelitis and reviews the relevant literature.
