Background: In the 2016 ESPGHAN recommendations on how to deal with hepatitis E virus infection in immunocompromised children, patients treated with chemotherapy were not specifically mentioned.
Observations: Two teenagers treated with chemotherapy for acute leukemia and medulloblastoma, respectively, were diagnosed with hepatic cytolysis. After numerous investigations hepatitis E was found, limiting the good progress of the chemotherapy treatment.
Conclusion: In the case of liver cytolysis in immunocompromised children treated with chemotherapy, hepatitis E virus infection has to be promptly diagnosed.
