Abstract

Molecular hydrogen (H₂) and carbon monoxide (CO) are ubiquitously available in the Earth's oceans, yet their low dissolved concentrations seemed unlikely to support microbial growth. Lappan, Shelley, Islam et al. now report that dissolved H₂ supports the growth of diverse aerobic marine bacteria in the oceans.
