This study seeks to compare the response to intensive day hospital treatment of male eating disorder patients to their female counterparts. Male and female subjects are compared on a range of behavioural criteria and psychometric measures at both admission and discharge. Males resemble females both at admission and discharge, except in that they show slightly lower scores on the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT) and Eating Disorders Inventory (EDI). Male scores remain well above population norms for men. Global clinical outcome is also very similar for both groups. The authors conclude that males with eating disorders can be treated in intensive group therapy settings where most patients are female, and that their response to treatment is not immediately different to that of female patients.
